The Sigismund Bell was cast in Krakow in 1520 by a bell founder from Nuremberg – Hans Behem, and hung on a specially erected old defensive tower of the Royal Castle on the Wawel Hill. The very first sound of the Bell was heard by the inhabitants of Kraków on July 13, 1521. The founder of the bell was King Sigismund I the Old, who intended "not only to the Most High God, but also to the glory of the Jagiellonian House and the Kingdom of Poland to call". Over the years, it has grown into one of the most important national symbols.
