All the King’s Tapestries: Homecomings 2021–1961–1921

The Wawel Castle in Krakow, the former residence of the Kings of Poland, is famous for the tapestries of Sigismund Augustus, the Jagiellon.

Woven in Brussels in 16 century, they survived four centuries of stormy and dramatic events and, as the king’s last will, they still remain a Polish national treasure. In 1795, 157 tapestries were stolen by Russians and only 136 came back home in 1921. In September 1939, a few days after German invasion of Poland, all tapestries were evacuated to Canada. They returned home in 1961.
The exhibition ” All the King’s Tapestries – Homecomings 1921-1961-2021″ shows King’s good taste and love for exceptionally beautiful masterpieces. Undoubtedly it’s one of the most important events in Krakow 2021 as well as the Altar of Veit Stoss restoration which I mentioned previously: https://wawel.krakow.pl/en/exhibition-temporary/all-the-king-s-tapestries-homecomings-2021-1961-1921.
