New masterpieces at Wawel

The Wawel Royal Castle enriched its painting collection with two outstanding works of European art, 17th-century compositions: Pieter II Brueghl’s “Tavern Under Saint Michael” and “Still Life” by Willem Claesz Heda. The paintings obtained thanks to the patronage of the state from private collections in Paris constitute the largest purchase of paintings in the post-war history of Wawel in terms of value. The acquisition of the paintings was the result of a long search on the art market and the use of contacts built over the years in the European museum community.

The acquisitions will be displayed in the royal chambers – next to the tapestries of Sigismund Augustus and wonderful Italian paintings from the Lanckoroński collection.
